Manual Retouching
Photo retouching is an old art. Ever since the days of black and white photography, there has been photo retouching. The release of technological advances in photography are often accompanied by relevant tools for retouching. The most basic technique is the correction of tones and colors when they were introduced. Also known as touching up, this is usually done at photography shops. Retouching for commercial purposes requires a more advanced techinque and complicated process. First, two or more transparencies are exposed in the darkroom using soft edge masking (similar to the 'layers' and 'masking' function in Photoshop). Chemicals and dyes are used to add the finishing touches.

Digital Retouching
In 1990, Adobe Photoshop 1.0 was born. In the past twenty years, this program has transformed the entire photo retouching industry, and continues to be the standard in photo retouching. However, large workstation system such as English Quantel and American Dicomed have existed and been in use before Photoshop. At that time digital photography and modern day printing were still in an exploration stage, resulting in a complicated and time consuming process for photo retouchers. Transparencies are converted into digital files using a drum scanner. After the retouching work is completed on the computer, the file is converted back into transparency using an output film printer. In 1990, Lam Yuk Fai acquired a complete system for photo retouching, including a Howtek drum scanner, Dicomed workstation, Macintosh computers, and a Fire 1000 film recorder, placing him on the cutting edge of digital photo retouching in Hong Kong. Furthermore, Yuk Fai partnered with a professional photo lab in order to preserve color accuracy and sharpness, becoming Hong Kong's premier one-stop photo retouching solution.
